Associate Writer
Job Description:
Reporting to the Manager of Internal Communications, the associate writer is responsible for a variety of general communication activities including drafting news and feature articles for the hospitals three publications – Bulletin, Medical Staff News and Nurse – and creating content for the BWH internal and external Web sites, e-mail announcements and BWH Community Connects video screens.
Responsibilities:
Working with every level of BWH staff from executives to front-line personnel, the associate writer drafts features and news articles, Web content, e-mail announcements and press releases that represent the mission, vision and values of the institution and reflect the diversity of staff and employees.
Serve on various institutional committees representing Public Affairs. Assist in the development and composition of e-mail broadcast messages and key-prompt messages and directs other internal communication efforts regarding issue-oriented policy conferences, community benefits, ceremonies, anniversaries, and other events. Assist in the development of items for BWH Pike Notes, the hospital’s intranet site, the institution’s Internet site, and Community Connects, the video announcement screens located throughout the BWH campus. Supports other internal and external communication projects as assigned, including the annual service awards and other staff recognition events.
Qualifications:
B.A. in communications, journalism, liberal arts or related field; two to four years experience in professional communications in an institutional, corporate or agency setting, journalism or another writing-intensive atmosphere, experience in public affairs in an academic medical center or hospital environment a plus. Experience with Web content development and Websites, including Interwoven, a plus. Solid writing and oral communication skills a must. Knowledge of basic science or medical terminology helpful. Strong computer skills essential. Digital photography skills a plus.

• Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail and demonstrated ability in managing multiple projects simultaneously while working effectively under the pressure of last minute deadlines and changing priorities.
• Takes initiative and functions effectively, both independently and as a member of a team, with a willingness to assist with routine and last minute projects.
• Exceptional judgment and discretion in handling sensitive and confidential issues.
• Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.
